There are many decisions to be made in choosing a two-way radio system. One common decision to be made is choosing a conventional or trunked P25 radio system. Many agencies wonder what the differences are between the two and what they can expect the advantages of each to be.

Conventional System: This type of system requires that radio channels be selected by the user, but also features instant channel access. A conventional system doesn’t rely upon a control channel or core switching. Often used for smaller group applications.

Trunked System: A trunked system automatically assigns radio channels to users, and relies upon a control channel and core switching. Channel access is not instantaneous, but is largely influenced by technology. Trunked systems lend themselves well to supporting large groups of users.

What do both conventional and trunked systems have in common? Each system has native digital control signaling, and the ability to support analog and digital consoles.

If you’re evaluating a new two-way radio system for your department or agency, you no doubt have many decisions ahead of you, including conventional versus trunked P25 radio systems. Relm Wireless has the latest advances in technology and the two-way radio equipment that your agency needs to stay up-to-date and functional in the communications world.
